In the land of oval ball, one football player stood out this year. Agenais Frank Magri distinguished himself in the European Cup at Toulouse FC in Ligue 1 and became a Cameroonian national team player.
As of January 1, 2023, few people knew SC Bastia’s Agen-born forward Frank Magri. 365 days later, Lot-et-Garonnais made a name for itself in the football world and reached a peak of great emotions. The 24-year-old’s current success does not depend on luck or fate in any way.
Born in a rugby town, Frank Magri was always more interested in football. However, the connection with the oval ball and eight Brennus clubs was traced. Her mother, Henriette, who ran an African hair salon on Rue Lafayette, saw SUA island players come there to get their famous braids done. At university young Magri tried his hand at rugby. “I liked it but just for fun. I played on the wing and frankly I liked it very much. But I couldn’t compete because it’s a bit too harsh a sport for me,” he smiled in our recent columns.

At another SUA where Frank Magri flourished was football. He stood out and shined in the young Agen teams. He wore the blue and white jersey until he was 14, before joining Mérignac and then professional club SCO d’Angers. After completing his education in Maine-et-Loire, Agenais started to get to know the professional team playing in Ligue 1 at that time. But he is still not given his chance at the top level. The fault also lies in injuries that always occur at the wrong time.
So, in the winter of 2022, Agenais decided to move to Bastia in Ligue 2 with the desire to play more, and this choice paid off. He quickly won in Corsica and was fully involved in a good 2022-2023 season, taking 4th place in the standings. Magri posted good statistics: he scored 13 goals and made 4 assists in 24 matches. Beautiful year started!
This caught the attention of recruiters in Ligue 1 and a club Frank Magri knew well… “When you are from Agen, when you are a young footballer and you have the dream of playing at a high level, when you grow up in Toulouse. It’s truly a rewarding thing. Moreover, my first match in the stands was at the Stadium! » The case was therefore heard quickly and ten years after his departure from SUA, the Agenai returned to his native South West.
Goal against Liverpool
Magri integrated perfectly into the Toulouse dressing room. Of the 17 league matches played in 2023, he played in 16, including 10 as a starter. He scored four goals when sometimes used up front or on the left of the attack. And Lot-et-Garonnais will score two more meaningful goals in the autumn.
The striker also discovered the European Cup (Europa League) with TFC. Morlar hosted the legendary Liverpool team in the group match on November 9. Frank Magri, who was a substitute at the kick-off, will have a game he will never forget that evening. He would come on in the 70th minute to score his fourth ball into the English net and deliver a historic victory to his team and the melting stadium. “When the final whistle blew, we realized that we had won against Liverpool and we felt great joy. We defeated one of the favorites of this competition. Everything is happening a little too fast for me this year. It is the reward of individual and collective work. I knew I had the potential and qualities to go a little further. And it is true that today I have a dream at this club, especially in the Europa League. On a personal level I am very happy. »
And ten days later, Lot-et-Garonnais will appear on the international stage this time with the Cameroon election, which he has been participating in since October. He closed the victory of the “Indomitable Lions” against Mauritius on the first day of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with a beautiful header.
2023 looks like the year of enlightenment at the highest level for the striker, who found his “compatriot from Agen” Jim Allevinah (Clermont) in Ligue 1. And the year 2024 promises to be quite exciting with the very high possibility of qualifying for the African Cup of Nations (pre-selected by Cameroon) and the final stages of the European Cup. Frank Magri’s opportunity to go even higher.
